Righteous Music Video
INTRODUCTION
I headed out on a walk the other morning, listening to Righteous, allowing the music to wash over me and hoping for some inspiration. I pulled my phone out to re-start the song (again) and noticed my long shadow projected by the low morning sun. I started playing around with my shadow and things started clicking together.
IDEA
The song feels so introspective to me. Conchúr is obviously addressing his god, but this is often a reflection of our own feelings. As I walked and inspected my shadow, I thought of how our shadows are both entirely representative of us, but can also feel like a completely different being.
The idea of being able to split ourselves into multiple shadows that chase one another, walk in unison, fight (etc.) opened up a huge number of interesting ways to portray the music. Using (faceless) shadows allows for the heady representation of both Conchúr’s music, and the viewer to put a piece of themselves into the piece (we don’t know who these shadows are).
CONCEPT
Cutting between things like a shadow splitting into two, rotations with multiple subjects, a shadow chasing itself, the cuts (and slow motion footage) will draw the viewer in promoting intrigue (how did they do that?). The pacing of the edit will match the music. The fuller sections of the music will be matched with more kinetic footage and more complex edits.
An example idea of splitting shadows to make a line of characters. This can form from one direction, and then chase from the other. N.b. All the footage and editing in this document is super quick and rough to communicate the concept!
STYLE
I really like how the black and white, and the high contrast, make the shadows the most important element. I would envisage shooting on a number of backgrounds (beach sand, grass, pavement etc.) to give some interesting textures to cut between/together. I’d also envisage putting quite a lot of grain on the final output to give it a nice gritty feel.
THANK YOU
I hope you’ve enjoyed this. I really love the song and I think this video could really help platform it. There is tonnes of ideas and ways we can work with the concept so I’d love to talk about it further.
All the best,
David.
